Approach

Designed by Soil Instruments, the Hydraulic Piezometer is a passive pore-pressure sensor that transfers pressure from a buried ceramic filter tip, through a hydraulic line and into a remote readout station. It operates without electronic components in the probe, reducing the likelihood of failures in saturated environments. The sensor typically functions with de-aired water in the hydraulic circuit and a tip chosen to suit the soil. Data readout can be performed at the surface with a Bourdon gauge or via external pressure transducers and data acquisition systems. Other key features include:
  • Pressure range of 2000 kPa to –50 kPa
  • Flushable hydraulic lines for increased accuracy
  • Excellent stability and accuracy for long-term deployments
  • Constructed entirely of non-corroding materials
The simplicity of the Hydraulic Piezometer makes it ideal for complex subsurface environments, fine soils or remote installations where electronic sensors can suffer from failure and signal interference.

We use the sensor to track pore pressure changes that could affect dam wall stability, cause seepage or impact foundation stability. The Hydraulic Piezometer is also well suited to deep borehole installations, where electrical sensors are unviable due to interference and saturation. The sealed hydraulic system provides stable readings in these conditions and when paired with data loggers, offers a reliable understanding of groundwater movement. With a Hydraulic Piezometer incorporated into their borehole monitoring system, managers can support long-term studies, dewatering strategies and construction-stage monitoring.
