Borehole Monitoring in Perth

Monitoring bore water is crucial for maintaining the stability and safety of construction sites, dams, and other geotechnical projects.

Monitel utilises advanced geotechnical instrumentation, such as open groundwater sensors  and a vast borehole piezometer range to gather data about water pressure and quality. These sensors report real-time data, enabling accurate monitoring of pore water pressure and groundwater conditions.

Our solutions ensure compliance with environmental regulations, improve site safety and offer continuous insights into groundwater behaviour, helping clients make informed decisions that protect structures and the surrounding environment.

How Monitel Measures Bore Water Levels

Monitel uses a wide range of bore water sensors across our projects, including piezometers and open groundwater sensors.

Using a Piezometer

At Monitel, we have access to a piezometer range ideal for groundwater monitoring. This includes standpipe and strain gauge piezometers.

A vibrating wire piezometer (VWP) is an easily deployable option suited to environments such as boreholes and tailings dams.

VWPs measure pore water pressure by converting changes in wire tension (caused by diaphragm deflection) into an electrical signal. They provide real-time data engineers can use to monitor changes in water pressure and ground stability.

The vibrating wire technology is highly accurate and reliable, measuring minute changes in water pressure and levels with precision. The signal from a VWP is immune to issues like cable length, splicing and moisture, making it ideal for geotechnical monitoring in saturated soils.

The vibrating wire piezometer is a popular choice for long-term monitoring due to its durability and high-performance in harsh environmental conditions. The real-time data they provide is essential for making informed decisions regarding construction progress, site safety and environmental impact.

Using the CT2X Sensor

As an example, the CT2X bore water level sensor is an advanced tool used for groundwater assessments, offering precise measurements of conductivity, temperature and total dissolved solids (TDS). The sensor provides real-time data, enabling early detection of changes in groundwater quality and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

It is designed for durability and long-term use in all environmental conditions, making it ideal for continuous groundwater monitoring in various industries, including construction, agriculture and environmental management.

Seamless integration with existing data systems facilitates automated, efficient monitoring, offering reliable and accurate insights into groundwater conditions. This makes the CT2X sensor essential for maintaining water quality and environmental safety.

Our Software

Monitel provides its clients with software that gathers and visualises real-time data, storing it in the cloud for remote access. The software also allows clients to set up alerts should a quick intervention be needed. This data is precise and actionable, positioning clients to make informed decisions about their site.

Borehole Monitoring in Practice – Alkimos Desalination Plant & Mardie Salt and Potash

Alkimos

At the Alkimos Desalination Plant, VWPs played a crucial role in monitoring pore water pressure within a pre-load area. These instruments were installed at specific depths to gather data on how water pressure in the soil layers changed during the pre-loading phase.

Monitoring water pressure gave an understanding of interaction between soil stability and moisture content, which could have affected the integrity of the structure. The data provided by the VWPs helped engineers assess how the soil was settling in response to changes in water pressure, ensuring the site remained stable before construction began.

Mardie Salt and Potash

In the Salt and Potash Groundwater Monitoring Project, CT2X sensors were deployed to meet environmental regulations that required continuous groundwater monitoring. Sixty sensors were strategically placed across a 50 km area to gather real-time data on groundwater conditions.

The data collected helped detect early signs of environmental changes, allowing the project team to respond quickly to any issues. The sensors provided critical insights into groundwater quality, enabling compliance with regulatory standards and protecting ecologically and culturally significant areas from potential mining impacts. This proactive approach ensured informed decision-making and environmental protection throughout the project.
